Guest contribution in the mountain and university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld
The mountain and university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld levies a guest contribution to cover its expenses for the construction, acquisition, expansion, improvement, renewal, operation, maintenance and administration of facilities that serve tourism as well as for events organised for the purposes of tourism. The collection area covers the entire municipal areas of the mountain towns of Altenau, Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Wildemann and the municipality of Schulenberg i. O.
These expenses also include the costs incurred or owed to a third party utilised by the mountain and university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The expenses include in particular the expenses of the Kurbetriebsgesellschaft "Die Oberharzer" mbH that are eligible for guest contributions.
Who has to pay the guest contribution?
All persons who stay in the health resorts or climatic health resorts without having a main residence there and who are offered the use of the tourist facilities are liable to pay the guest contribution.
What is the guest contribution levied for?
The guest contribution is a public tax. Your holiday resorts in the Upper Harz offer you extensive services and infrastructure for an unforgettable holiday in the Harz. So that you as a guest can use these services and facilities conveniently, you will receive a guest card (Harz guest card) for your stay, either from your host or directly from the tourist information centre.

All guests receive a guest card upon payment of the guest contribution, which is recognised throughout the Harz as a Harz guest card and contains offers for leisure activities that can be used free of charge or at a reduced rate upon presentation.

Guest contribution from 01.01.2024: Mountain and university town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld
The guest contribution is per person and overnight stay - in the villages of Altenau (districts of Torfhaus, Bastesiedlung, Gemkental and Eckertal residential area), Clausthal-Zellerfeld/Buntenbock, Schulenberg and Wildemann:
- Adults € 2.40, young people (6-17 years) € 1.62, children (0-5 years) pay no guest contribution
The annual guest fee from 01.01.2024 is:
- Adults € 86.40
- Children 6-17 years € 58.32
The assessment basis for the annual guest contribution is 36 overnight stays.
