Harzturm

The highlight of the Harz Mountains in Torfhaus

In early November 2023, the newly constructed Harz Tower opened to the public. An imposing structure standing 65 metres tall, its masterful architecture rises above the hills of Torfhaus, which, at 812 metres, is the highest village in the Harz Mountains. When you stand in front of it, you’re sure to find yourself exclaiming “Wow”: with its perfect form, this tower – built from wood and steel – presents itself as an interpretation of a tree trunk. Thanks to its lamella-like, interlocking construction, the tower sculpture resembles a giant wooden screw twisting its way towards the sky. The entrance building to the Harzturm is a modern alpine hut built from natural materials. Here, as well as your admission tickets, you’ll find a lovely selection of modern Harzturm souvenirs.

You can make your way to the top by lift or stairs. Once you reach the very top, the two viewing platforms offer a fantastic view over the Harz National Park and the Brocken. If you’d like to feel like a bird soaring through the air, you should head to the Skywalk with its panoramic views. The glass viewing platform simulates the sensation of floating in the air. And for thrill-seekers, there’s Germany’s highest slide, the ‘Rasantia’ adventure slide, complete with magical sound and light effects and rapid twists and turns. It seems to wrap itself around the tower, winding its way dynamically downwards for 110 metres. On the thrilling ride down, you’ll encounter the Baumis – funny forest creatures who look after the Harz Tower and get up to the odd bit of mischief.
