Polsterberger Hubhaus in Clausthal-Zellerfeld

The Polsterberger Hubhaus is a rustic forest restaurant in a sunny clearing in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Oberharz Water Management. Home-baked cakes and delicious, fresh dishes made from regional produce await you. Visit the Polsterberg lift house in the Oberharz, one of the most important technical structures in the Oberharz Water Management water management.

Between 1530 and 1870, almost 120 lakes were created in the Upper Harz Mountains, connected by channels, ditches and pipes to utilise the power of the water for underground ore mining and to make the hard work easier. The aim of the elaborate system was to "lift water by water".

Oberharz water management

The Polsterberger Hubhaus in Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the Oberharz Mountains was the highest water transfer point in the system. Using a special "pumping technique", water was lifted from a shaft under the lift house to a height of 18 metres and then channelled via a ditch to the next pond, the Hirschler Teich, which supplied two very productive silver mines with water power. Two water wheels in Polstertal provided the necessary power for the lifting pumps. Until 1872, the water power was transmitted by means of artificial wheels and wooden artificial rods ("Künste" = machines). After 1872, the wooden construction was replaced by a wire rope transmission and in 1909 by an electric pump. Today, the listed building houses a restaurant, a much-visited and popular excursion destination in the Harz Mountains.
