Torfhaus, a district of Altenau situated at an altitude of 812 metres, was once founded by peat cutters who worked in the nearby Oberharz moors. Today you can explore hiking trails paths and wooden footbridges through the ecologically valuable moors which provide an important habitat for numerous rare animal and plant species.
Torfhaus is the highest holiday resort in Lower Saxony and is a real magnet for visitors thanks to its convenient location, the direct view of the Brocken and direct access to the hiking and cross-country ski trail network.
From here, you can take the famous Goethe hiking trail or mountain bike directly up to the 1,141 metre high Brocken and into the Harz National Park. The National Park Visitor Centre offers a wealth of information about the flora and fauna of the Harz Mountains. In winter too, skiers, cross-country skiers and all other winter sports enthusiasts get their money's worth in Torfhaus.
Start your hike or mountain bike tour in Torfhaus
In Torfhaus, you will find numerous well-signposted hiking trails of varying lengths that lead right through the Harz National Park. Torfhaus is also the ideal place to start your mountain bike tours on the routes of the "Volksbank Arena Harz". If you haven't brought your own mountain bike but still fancy a bike tour, you can hire mountain bikes and e-bikes.
Plunge into winter fun in the Oberharz at Torfhaus
In winter, Torfhaus is the centre of attraction for winter sports enthusiasts. Alpine skiers, snowboarders, cross-country skiers and tobogganists get their money's worth here. Around 100 km of cross-country ski trails are groomed here. A drag lift for skiers and snowboarders as well as a toboggan lift delight winter sports enthusiasts.
Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding equipment and toboggans can be hired from the ski and toboggan hire shops on the B4 and at the large car park in Torfhaus.
